Redesign or rebuild: what to do with an outdated site

The decision rule for an outdated site is simpler than it feels: if the foundation is bad (broken on phones, painfully slow, impossible to edit, built on an abandoned platform), rebuild; if the foundation is sound and only the skin is dated, redesign. With my prices, a rebuild costs USD 400 to 900 and takes 7 days to 3 weeks, which is frequently cheaper than the hourly archaeology of patching a site nobody understands anymore.

Run this 15-minute diagnosis

Open your site on a phone with mobile data. Does it load in under 3 seconds and read without pinching? Try to edit something simple, a price or a photo: can anyone in your business do it, or is it “email the guy”? Check who owns the domain and hosting (you, or the guy). Send yourself a message through the contact form and see if it arrives. And ask what the site runs on: if the answer is a page builder from 2016, an unpatched platform, or nobody knows, that is your answer.

Fail two or more of those and you are not looking at a facelift, you are looking at a foundation problem wearing an old design.

Why rebuilds are cheaper than they sound

People assume rebuilding discards value, but an old site’s value is mostly its content and its search history, and both survive the move. The texts, photos and structure migrate; the addresses get redirected so Google carries your accumulated ranking to the new pages. What gets discarded is exactly the part that hurts: the unmaintainable code, the slow platform, the layout from another decade.

Patching, meanwhile, bills by surprise: every fix on a bad foundation fights the foundation, and you pay hourly for the fight. A USD 400 to 900 rebuild with a fixed price and a written date is very often the smaller number, before even counting what a faster site does for conversions. I have written about where those surprise costs come from in cheap web development gets expensive.

When redesign is the right call

If the site is technically healthy (fast, mobile-correct, editable, on a maintained platform) and simply looks tired or no longer matches your brand, a redesign reuses the foundation and changes the visual layer. This is the cheaper path when it is honestly available. My design services start at USD 200 for idea and design, USD 300 for brand identity if the problem is upstream of the website. What I will not do is redesign on top of a rotten foundation; it wastes your money twice.

Do not lose your Google position in the move

The one real risk of a rebuild is throwing away your search equity by changing page addresses without redirects. Every old address that ranked or was linked must forward to its new equivalent. This is routine work when planned and a quiet disaster when forgotten, so it is part of every migration I do, along with checking after launch that the important pages still appear where they did.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know what my current site is built on?

Ask whoever maintains it, or send me the address: identifying the platform takes me minutes and I will tell you plainly whether it is worth keeping. That first opinion costs nothing.

Will I lose my Google ranking if I rebuild?

Not if the migration is done properly: redirects from every old address, same or better content, and a faster site usually helps rankings rather than hurting them. Losing position happens when redirects are skipped.

Can I keep my current texts and photos?

Yes, and you should keep the ones that work. Content migrates; if some texts deserve a rewrite, that is decided page by page, with you. Nothing is retyped for sport.

Redesign only: what would that cost?

Idea and design start at USD 200, applied to your existing foundation if it is sound. If the diagnosis says the foundation will not carry it, I tell you before taking your money, with the rebuild quote next to it for comparison.
